 September 2016

We would like to begin this school year by welcoming all our staff, pupils and families back to Carrakennedy N.S. We hope you had a happy and relaxing Summer break. It is hard to believe that September is nearing an end! Our new Junior Infants, Anna, Aoife, David, Ella, Ethan, Lauren, Lucy and Ryan have settled in very well and we wish them many years of success and happiness at Carrakennedy N.S. We look forward to aother happy, safe and interesting school year ahead and trust in your on-going support as always.

An update on Staff for the 2016/’17 school year- Ms. Gibbons (shared between Cogaula NS and Ballintubber NS) and Ms. McDonnell (from Drummin NS) will continue to work as part of our Learning support/Resource team this year. Ms McGing (from Brackloon NS) will be joining this team also. We would like to welcome her to the school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our school staff for their hard work and dedication to your children’s education.

The Daily Mile

Mayo Sports Partnership, HSE West and Mayo Education Centre have joined forces to invite schools to take part in a free and simple initiative to improve the physical, social, emotional health and wellbeing of children. The Daily Mile encourages children to run, jog or walk for 15minutes each day. It is non-competitive and most children average a mile in the time. The Senior Room pupils have started the initiative and are really enjoying it so far as they set personal goals for themselves. To date each child has completed approx 15miles (the same as distance as Carrakennedy to Castlebar!!) We are very proud of them.

For further details on the daily mile you can log on to www.thedailymile.co.uk.

 IT Programmes

We have set up an account for all pupils from 1st to 6th class on two web based learning zones.

www.studyladder.com and www.storyworld.com .

These are free programmes and can be accessed by pupils from home on a tablet, laptop or computer. All pupils have been given their log in details. We would encourage pupils to use these programmes as they will enhance learning in a fun way.

Board of Management and Parents Association

We are very lucky to have a very supportive Board of Management and Parents’ Association in Carrakennedy NS.

The Board of Management meet regularly to ensure the smooth operation of the school for pupils and staff. We would like to thank all members of the BOM for their continued hard-work and commitment to the school.

Our annual Parents’ Association AGM will be held next month (Date to be confirmed). This is an important event in our school calendar and we invite all parents to come along and support the great work of our Parents’ Association. We will be hearing about the great work of the PA over the last twelve months and also a committee will be elected for the coming year. Please come along to share your views and ideas and to support your child’s school in a very meaningful way. The PA add greatly to the school life and we thank them for all their enthusiasm and dedication to the school.

 “Bring Back the 80’s” Musical

We look forward to our annual trip to the Sacred Heart School next Friday, 7th October for the musical. The PA have kindly agreed to fund the bus. Children need to bring 3euro with them on the day for their admission to the show. We look forward to seeing all our past pupils on stage.

The Senior pupils have started the repertoire for this year’s National Children’s Choir. The NCC is a school based choral experience for primary school children. Over the next few months they will learn a total of 16 songs encompassing many different musical eras and genres. Next Spring the pupils will perform in a regional concert alongside pupils from other participating Mayo schools. We look forward to the big concert and will enjoy rehearsing in the meantime!
